Tutorial Night Tuesday July 7th

On Tuesday July 7, 2009 we will be discussing some basic camera settings and how to access the many basic functions of your camera.  I have been shooting for some time now with digital and years before that with film.  There are still basic things that I forget to do when I go out and shoot.

A good example of that is a recent shoot (July 4th) at Brazos Bend State Park.  I had everything ready the day before for my 4:30am alarm to get up and drive to the park.  My clothes were laid out, gear was cleaned and packed by the door.  My truck was gassed up, oil changed and water in the squirter for all the bugs while driving there.  I had all my batteries charged, CF cards formatted with the camera body I would be using, flash and batteries for use with my Better Beamer ( I remembered this time Tim), tripod legs covered with pipe insulation on the upper legs and camo tape to keep it all together, lens pen, lcd cleaning cloth, AI focus set, ISO set, spot metering set, no exposure compensation set, card in camera, freshly charged battery in camera and I'm excited to go.  What more could you want or need to do?  How about setting the right date and time?  That's right; I had posted some photos to the web on a photo forum from that shoot.  I was looking for a sequence of shots I took and wanted to know how much time had expired during that time.  When I looked at my metadata in Lightroom (you know what metadata is, right?) the date and time was wrong.  That makes a big difference when you are referencing a certain date or time for your files or noting on a forum when the shots were taken.  Pretty basic mistake, right?

How many of you know how to access all the features of your camera?  How many of you know what those different settings do for you?  Do you know what a firmware upgrade is, what it can do for you or should you even do it?  Do you know how to set the date and time and have you done it?

We will try to answer these questions and others at the meeting.  We have internet access and will show you onscreen, using a digital projector, where this information is located and how to access this information to your benefit.

I'm looking for some of the more knowledgeable Canon and Nikon users to show up and help with this.  If we have enough power users we may be able to split up into groups for some individual help by make and maybe by model.  If not, we will do it as a group.

There will be snacks and soft drinks provided.  The meeting is held at TAACCL and opens at 7:00pm.  I look forward to seeing you there!

Program Night Tuesday June 23rd

On Tuesday, June 23, 2009 member Larry Patrick, and Photographer of the Year 2007, will present a 'Body of Work'.  Larry will provide 20-25 photos for review by the group prior to the presentation of the program.  He will then go into a discussion of his photos, his thought process when taking a photo, how he views his own photos and why he does what he does with his photos.

Larry has submitted many photos for judging in the past several years.  He has grown in his craft and now places many of his photos throughout his blog located here.  He participates in many of our field trips and posts many photos in our Club Activities folders.  His most recent posts from our Brazos Bend State Park trip are located here.

The club description of a Body of Work - At some levels there is a BoW requirement. To meet this requirement, a member must either present a BoW to the club or have his BoW accepted in a juried show whose prospectus designates the show submission requirements as BoWs. Judging Committee approval is also required for either approach.

A Body of Work is comprised of a certain number of photographs, usually 20-25,  that represent a common theme or idea.  The member makes a request to the VP to present the BoW on a Program night.  The BoW can be banked until the member needs it to move on to the next level requiring a BoW for advancement.

There will be snacks and soft drinks provided.  The meeting is held at TAACCL and opens at 7:00pm.
